Bike Parking Bill Approved by House Committee on Ecology

Sa Gerreria Comunity bike parking

We applaud the House Committee on Ecology as it approved a law that provides greater support for bike-commuters, promotes cycling as a healthy lifestyle option, and minimizes fuel consumption.

The principal author of HB 5240 Bike Parking bill, Akbayan Rep. Walden Bello thanked his colleagues  in Congress for allowing his proposal to be approved and put into practice.

“Akbayan worked with various cycling and environmental groups to craft the Bike Parking bill. The point simply is that health and environmental preservation go hand in hand, and cycling is a good way to promote both,” Bello explained. “This is also why we have a growing population of bicycle users in the metro. Unfortunately, the absence of secured parking spaces prevented them from using their bikes to work and to commercial and public establishments.”

  1. i use my bicycle everyday, as much as possible. fortunately, our office provides parking for bikes, in a common floor with motorcycles. but still, there are many establishments, malls, and places that does not provide support for our bicycles.. specially Araneta Center.. i hope this bill will come to pass..

    • Thanks for your comment. We are currently verifying the actual situation in Araneta. But as reported before by a guard, they only ban bikes when the Araneta’s are there. We don’t know the exact reason bakit ganoon.

  2. I would like to quote this statement… “Unfortunately, the absence of secured parking spaces prevented them from using their bikes to work and to commercial and public establishments.” – if I may add a detail, bikenapping is one thing that’s also preventing bikers to hop in their rides in some areas. Just how stupid Filipinos can be.
